There’s something about Christmas tree farm family photos that makes them feel extra special. The evergreen trees, cozy textures, Christmas colors, and natural outdoor backdrop can make for some of the prettiest family pictures of the year.
But figuring out what everyone should wear?
That’s usually the hard part.
You want everyone to coordinate without looking like you bought five versions of the exact same outfit. You need colors that photograph well together. And depending on where you live, your idea of a “Christmas outfit” might need to work in 35-degree weather—or 80-degree weather.
If you’re planning a Christmas tree farm photo shoot this year, here are some simple ways to put together a family look that feels coordinated, natural, and photo-ready.
1. Start With a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits

One of the easiest mistakes to make with family photos is trying to make everyone match.
Instead, choose 3–4 colors that work together and distribute them throughout the family.
For a classic Christmas tree farm look, try:
Cream + Forest Green + Camel + Burgundy
For something softer:
Cream + Sage + Dusty Blue + Taupe
For warm, earthy holiday photos:
Rust + Cream + Olive + Chocolate Brown
And for a more traditional Christmas look:
Burgundy + Navy + Cream + Evergreen
The goal isn’t for everyone to wear every color. One person might wear a cream dress, another a forest-green sweater, and the kids might bring in camel and burgundy.
That’s what makes the finished photo feel coordinated instead of overly matched.

2. Use Your Location as Part of the Outfit

Your Christmas tree farm is already giving you a gorgeous dark-green background.
Use it.
Cream, camel, rust, burgundy, dusty blue, navy, and warm neutrals all stand out beautifully against evergreen trees.
I’d avoid putting the entire family in dark green. A little green can tie everything together, but you don’t want everyone disappearing into the background.
The same applies to busy Christmas prints. One subtle pattern can be adorable. Five competing plaid outfits can become distracting very quickly.
3. Mix Textures to Make Simple Outfits Look Better

You don’t need complicated outfits to create beautiful holiday photos.
Texture does a lot of the work.
Think:
- Cable-knit sweaters
- Corduroy
- Linen
- Denim
- Velvet
- Cotton
- Suede or leather boots
- Soft knit dresses
For example, Mom could wear a cream knit dress while Dad wears a navy button-down with camel trousers. A little girl could wear a burgundy velvet dress, while a boy wears a cream sweater with dark pants.
Nobody is wearing the same thing, but everything belongs together.
What Should Mom Wear for Christmas Tree Farm Family Photos?

Start with Mom’s outfit if that makes planning easier.
A few combinations I love:
Cream midi dress + camel boots + simple gold jewelry
Rust sweater + cream trousers + brown ankle boots
Burgundy midi dress + neutral shoes
Cream blouse + camel skirt + boots
Once you choose Mom’s main color, use the rest of the palette to build everyone else’s outfits around it.
And remember: Christmas doesn’t automatically mean sweaters.
If your holiday photos are happening somewhere warm, a lightweight cream dress, linen separates, short sleeves, and sandals can still look festive when you use the right color palette.
What Should Dad Wear?

Dad doesn’t need an elaborate outfit.
Usually, a simple shirt + pants combination works beautifully.
Try:
Forest green button-down + camel chinos
Cream sweater + dark denim
Navy polo + khaki trousers
Dusty blue button-down + cream chinos
Choose one color that connects his outfit to someone else’s without copying their entire look.
Christmas Tree Farm Outfit Ideas for Kids

Kids’ outfits are where you can bring in some of the sweeter colors and textures.
For girls:
Burgundy velvet dress + cream shoes
Cream eyelet dress + navy ribbon
Sage dress + camel boots
For boys:
Cream sweater + olive trousers
Dusty blue polo + gray trousers
Navy shirt + camel chinos
The children’s outfits should complement the adults—not look like miniature copies of them.
4. Dress for the Actual Weather
This one matters more than people realize.
A Pinterest-perfect chunky sweater isn’t very cute when your child is sweating through the entire photoshoot.
And a lightweight dress isn’t going to make anyone happy during a freezing outdoor session.
Plan for the actual temperature on photo day, not just the season.
That’s one of the reasons I wanted weather included when I created my Family Outfit Planner.
If you’re planning Christmas photos somewhere warm, the planner can recommend lightweight holiday looks.
If you’re taking pictures somewhere cold, it can suggest layers and heavier fabrics.
The occasion stays festive, but the clothes actually make sense.

Don’t Want to Figure All of This Out Yourself?
This is exactly why I created the Family Outfit Planner.
Instead of opening 20 Pinterest tabs and trying to mentally figure out whether everyone’s outfits work together, you tell the planner what you’re working with.
Choose your:
Occasion → Family Members → Weather → Setting → Style → Color Direction
Then tap Style My Family.
The planner creates a personalized Family Style Guide for you.
Your Style Guide Includes:
- A coordinated family color palette
- Individual outfit recommendations for each family member
- What to look for while shopping
- Fabric and texture recommendations
- An overall style direction
- An explanation of why the outfits work together
- Things to avoid
- A stylist tip
- The ability to save your favorite looks
- The option to create another look
- Shop Similar on Amazon links for recommended pieces
And you’re not limited to Christmas.
Use It for Family Photos All Year Long
Once Christmas is over, you can use your planner again for:
Fall family photos
Spring pictures
Easter photos
Beach family photos
Family vacations
Thanksgiving
Weddings
Birthdays and celebrations
Family reunions
Everyday family photos
Special events
That’s why I made it an interactive digital tool instead of another Christmas outfit checklist you’ll use once and forget about.

This would be a good spot for another cell-phone mockup showing the actual planner interface.

5. Don’t Forget Shoes
Shoes are easy to overlook when you’re concentrating on everyone’s clothes, but they can make a big difference in the finished photo.
Try to keep shoes within the same general family:
Camel / Brown / Cream / Tan / Black
They don’t need to match.
For an outdoor Christmas tree farm photo shoot, boots, loafers, neutral sneakers, and closed-toe flats can all work depending on the weather and overall style.
6. Lay Everything Out Before Photo Day
Once you’ve picked everyone’s outfits, put everything together.
Literally.
Lay Mom’s outfit next to Dad’s, then add each child’s outfit.
Ask yourself:
Is one color taking over?
Does one outfit look completely unrelated to the others?
Are there too many patterns?
Is everyone dressed for the same level of formality?
Will these colors stand out against the location?
You should be able to look at all of the outfits together and feel like they belong in the same photo without being identical.
The Easiest Way to Plan Your Next Family Look
Family photos should be about capturing the people you love—not stressing for three days about whether a burgundy dress works with an olive sweater.
The Family Outfit Planner was created to make that part easier.
Tell it about your family and where you’re going, and it helps you build a coordinated look that works for your actual occasion, weather, family, and style.
