How Hypnobirthing Helped Me Transform My Birth Experience.

When I think back to my first birth in 2018, the word that comes to mind is powerless.

I gave birth in a hospital, vaginally, with an epidural. At least, that was the plan. But the epidural failed. I was in pain, yet stuck in bed and unable to move. I felt trapped — disconnected from my body and my baby.

I remember lying there thinking: There has to be another way to do this.

At the time, I was completely uneducated about childbirth or even what my body was capable of. A home birth wasn’t even on my radar. I thought the hospital was my only option.

The Turning Point

Fast forward to 2020, and the world looked completely different. In the middle of a pandemic, the thought of going to a hospital full of COVID patients terrified me. Even worse, many women were being forced to give birth wearing masks.

That’s when I started researching home births and hypnobirthing.

I had always dreamed of a calm birth — maybe even in warm water, with a peaceful environment — but I never thought it was possible. Yet as I learned more, something inside me shifted. I realized: My body was designed for this.

My First Home Birth

When the time came, I was nervous, of course. What if something went wrong? What if I couldn’t handle the pain?

But with the support of my midwife, my doula, and my husband, I experienced something completely different from that powerless hospital birth years earlier.

I breathed. I repeated affirmations like:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

“My body was designed to do this.”

I pictured myself on an island, lying on the beach, listening to the ocean waves.

And to my surprise… it worked.

The contractions were intense, but my body knew what to do. With counter-pressure from my husband and doula, and the tools of hypnobirthing, I felt calm, confident, and in control.

When my baby was born, I wasn’t stuck in a hospital bed. I was at home, surrounded by love. I was able to walk, shower, and climb into my own bed with my family. I felt empowered.

What I Learned

What surprised me most was this: birth doesn’t have to be something we “survive.”

When we surrender, trust our bodies, and use the right tools, birth can be peaceful, even beautiful.

Hypnobirthing changed my entire perspective. It taught me that birth is not something to fear — it’s something to prepare for with the right mindset.
